How to Shorten a LinkedIn URL

The short version

1. Customize LinkedIn's own public profile URL first (desktop: Me → View Profile → Public profile & URL → Edit). Aim for linkedin.com/in/yourname.
2. For posts, know that LinkedIn auto-shortens any shared URL longer than 26 characters once you click Post.
3. When you need a third-party short link — company page, event, job post, resume QR, email signature with analytics — paste the LinkedIn URL into zip1.io, set a custom alias under Advanced Options, and click Shorten.
4. Optional: open /stats/<slug> for country, referrer, browser, and OS, or export CSV / JSON / XLSX / XML.
5. For outbound campaign URLs you share on LinkedIn, append utm_source=linkedin (or use the UTM builder) so Zip1 and your analytics agree on the source.

What “short LinkedIn URL” usually means

Three different things get searched under the same phrase:

If you only need a clean personal profile URL for a resume or email signature, stop at LinkedIn's own setting. That is free, native, and what Google rewards for “how to shorten LinkedIn URL.” Zip1 is for everything LinkedIn does not give you: a slug on a host you chose, per-link click stats Zip1 owns, a QR code, or a trackable wrapper around a company page, event, or job URL.

Intent 1 — Customize your LinkedIn public profile URL

LinkedIn Help (Manage your public profile URL) is the source of truth. Steps below match that article as of 2026-09-24.

Desktop

1. Click the Me icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage.
2. Click View Profile.
3. On the right pane, click the Edit icon next to Public profile & URL.
4. Under Edit your custom URL, click the Edit icon next to your current public profile URL.
5. Type the last part of the URL (your name, or the closest available variant).
6. Click Save.

Mobile app

Open your profile → Contact info → Profile URL → edit the custom URL segment → Save. Full mobile steps are in the same LinkedIn Help article.

Rules that matter

• Custom segment: 3–100 characters, no spaces, symbols, special characters, or the word “LinkedIn.”
• Case insensitive: JaneSmith and janesmith resolve the same.
• You can change the custom URL up to five times within six months.
• Find the current URL under Public profile & URL (Find your LinkedIn public profile URL) — it starts with linkedin.com/in/….

That native URL is already short enough for most resumes and signatures. Customize it before you reach for any third-party tool.

LinkedIn also shortens links inside posts (lnkd.in)

When you share a URL longer than 26 characters in a post, LinkedIn automatically shortens it after you click Post (Short URLs in shared posts). Those display as lnkd.in/… links. You do not control the slug, you do not get Zip1-style per-link analytics on that host, and you cannot turn the behaviour off.

If you care about a readable short form you chose, create the short link first (for example zip1.io/launch) and paste that into the post — keeping it under 26 characters if you want LinkedIn to leave the display alone. Zip1 is not lnkd.in.

When a third-party shortener still helps

Use Zip1 after the native profile URL is clean:

• Company pages, posts, events, and job links — a stable slug, QR for a hiring booth, or seasonal campaign wrapper.
• Email signature / resume / business card — zip1.io/you when you want click counts Zip1 records, or a QR that opens the profile on mobile.
• Click analytics you can export — /stats/<slug> with country, referrer, browser, and OS; CSV, JSON, XLSX, or XML. This is not LinkedIn profile-view analytics.
• Password, click cap, or expiry — Advanced Options (password sample shape: Preview@2026).

Create the Zip1 link

1. Copy the LinkedIn URL (profile, company, post, event, or job).
2. Paste it into zip1.io.
3. Open Advanced Options → set a custom alias (aliases truncate to 12 characters).
4. Optional: password, max-clicks, or expiry.
5. Click Shorten. Share zip1.io/<alias> or the generated QR.

Example: https://www.linkedin.com/in/janesmith → https://zip1.io/jane. Redirect: HTTP 302 to the exact saved URL, query string preserved.

Intent 2 — Track outbound links shared from LinkedIn

Separate job: you are sharing a non-LinkedIn destination inside a LinkedIn post, and you care that clicks came from LinkedIn.

1. Build the destination with UTM tags, e.g. utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=q4-launch, or use Advanced Options → UTM tags (UTM parameters).
2. Shorten to a custom slug such as zip1.io/q4-li.
3. Paste the short link into the LinkedIn post.
4. Read referrer + UTM evidence at /stats/q4-li and in your own analytics.

Zip1 counts opens of the short link. It does not count LinkedIn post impressions.
