Fill in the message you want to start
To is the person who receives it. Cc, bcc, subject and body are optional. The link updates as you type.
It all happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to zip1.io.
This code contains the mailto link. On a phone with a mail app, scanning it opens a new message. It is not a zip1.io link, and it does not count clicks.
Copy the link or the HTML snippet
Copy the mailto link for a button, a signature, or anywhere a full address is accepted. Copy the HTML snippet when you are pasting into a page. The snippet is an a tag. The link inside it is the same mailto link, with each joining ampersand written so the tag stays valid. The words between the tags are ordinary text, starting with Email and the first address.
For a link that opens a Google review instead of an email, use the Google review QR code generator.
Spaces, line breaks and ampersands are encoded
A mailto link is one address. Who it is for comes first. Then cc, bcc, subject and body are joined with an ampersand. An ampersand inside the subject or the body is written as %26. Left as itself, it would start a new field and cut the message in two.
A space is written as %20, not as a plus sign. Some mail programs would leave a plus sign in the message, or treat it as a space and surprise you later. A line break in the body is written as %0D%0A, the line break email expects. The @ in an address stays as it is.
mailto:[email protected]?subject=Hello%20there&body=Line%20one%0D%0ALine%20two
That example is a message to [email protected] with the subject Hello there and two lines in the body. Nothing in it is sent to zip1.io. The box above builds the same kind of link from what you type.
A mailto link is not a web page, so it stays long
zip1.io shortens web pages, addresses that start with http:// or https://. A mailto link opens an email program. It is not a web page, so this page does not offer Shorten it. Copy the link, or paste the HTML snippet into a page.
The QR code holds that same mailto link. Scanning it should open a new message on a phone that has a mail app. It is not a zip1.io link, and opening it is not counted. A very long message may not fit in a QR code. Keep the message short. Some mail programs cut off a mailto link longer than about 2,000 characters, so a long body may arrive cut short.
FAQ
-
What is a mailto link?
It opens the visitor's email program with the address filled in, and with the cc, bcc, subject and body if you set them. The link starts with mailto:.
-
Why does the link contain percent signs?
Those stand in for characters that would otherwise break the link. A space is written as %20, a line break as %0D%0A, and an ampersand as %26. An ampersand left as itself would start a new field. The @ in an address stays as it is.
-
Can I shorten a mailto link?
No. zip1.io shortens web pages, the kind of address that starts with http:// or https://. A mailto link opens an email program, so this page gives you the link and an HTML snippet only. The QR code contains that same mailto link.
-
Does this page send what I type anywhere?
No. The link and the snippet are built in your browser. Nothing you type in the box is sent to zip1.io.
-
How do I add more than one recipient?
Separate addresses with a comma in the To, Cc or Bcc field. Each address is encoded, and the commas stay between them.
