Bitly Alternative — Free, No Account, No API Key

Bitly is fine when you need brand domains, teams, and paid seats. Zip1 is the free Bitly alternative for people who just need a short link, a custom slug, and open click analytics — with no account and no API key. MCP is included; Bitly, short.io, and Rebrandly also ship MCP.

  • No signup
  • No API key
  • Open analytics
  • Free forever

The short version

  1. Paste any URL into zip1.io.
  2. Optional: Advanced Options → custom alias (aliases truncate to 12 characters), password (Preview@2026), expiry, or click cap.
  3. Click Shorten. Share zip1.io/<alias> or the QR.
  4. Open /stats/<slug> for country, referrer, browser, and OS — or export CSV / JSON / XLSX / XML.
  5. Scripts and agents: POST /api/create with no key, or MCP at https://zip1.io/mcp (snake_case tool args).

No signup. No monthly link quota — only per-IP rate limits. Zip1 issues a 302 to the exact URL you saved and preserves the query string.

Who this page is for (and who it isn't)

For you if you want off Bitly's free-tier caps or signup wall: one-off campaigns, custom slugs, password / expiry / click caps, open per-link analytics, a curl one-liner, or an agent that mints links without provisioning a key.

Not for you if you need custom domains at team scale, SSO, enterprise SLAs, A/B testing, or heatmaps. Stay on Bitly, short.io, or Rebrandly for that. Zip1 does not out-feature enterprise shorteners — it removes the account and key step for the free core.

Try it in 30 seconds

On the web: paste → optional Advanced Options → Shorten. Done.

REST (hyphen field names):

curl -X POST https://zip1.io/api/create \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "url": "https://example.com/launch",
    "alias": "q4-drop",
    "max-clicks": 100
  }'

Always read short_url from the response — a longer alias is truncated to 12 characters.

MCP: connect to https://zip1.io/mcp and call create_short_url with snake_case args (max_clicks, expiration_time). Do not copy REST hyphen fields into MCP payloads. Docs: URL shortener API · MCP docs.

Zip1 vs Bitly vs TinyURL vs short.io vs Rebrandly

Dedicated “Bitly alternative” listicles rank for a reason. This table is a product comparison, not a “best of 2026” ranking. Bitly free figures are from the Bitly pricing page as of 5 Oct 2026.

MCP is table stakes among several shorteners. Zip1's useful combination is MCP plus no-account create (REST and MCP) — not “we invented MCP for links.”

Trust = openness + create-time gates

Zip1 is a public shortener on purpose: no signup wall. Abuse controls sit on create for web, REST, and MCP alike — blocklist, Google Safe Browsing, and velocity checks. Those checks can refuse a link with 403 at create time. Report abuse via /report; policy lives on /abuse.

validate_url checks format and blocklist shape. It is not a create guarantee: create can still return 403 where validate said the URL looked valid.

FAQ

  • Is Zip1 a free Bitly alternative?

    Yes for the free core — shorten with a custom slug, open click analytics, password/expiry/click caps, no account and no monthly link quota. Bitly remains better for branded domains, teams, and enterprise seats.

  • Do I need an account or API key?

    No. Web, REST (POST /api/create), and MCP all create without signup or a key. Per-IP rate limits apply.

  • Does Zip1 have MCP?

    Yes — https://zip1.io/mcp. Bitly, short.io, and Rebrandly also ship MCP. Zip1's edge is MCP plus no-account create, not unique MCP.

  • Does Bitly password-protect links?

    Password protection is not listed on Bitly's pricing page. Zip1 offers password on the free path; details on the Bitly password protect alternative page.

  • Can I use a custom domain?

    Not on Zip1 today. Use Bitly, short.io, or Rebrandly if a branded domain is required. Zip1's free path is custom slugs on zip1.io.

  • Are analytics free?

    Yes — per-link stats at /stats/<slug> with CSV, JSON, XLSX, or XML export. No account wall.

  • Will create always succeed after validate_url?

    No. validate_url is not a create gate. Create-time blocklist, Safe Browsing, and velocity checks can still return 403.

  • What are Bitly alternatives for agents and scripts?

    Zip1's no-key REST and MCP path. Alternatives with MCP but account/key friction include Bitly, short.io, and Rebrandly.
